Montreal Graphic Design – About Sophie Mullen

Hi, I’m Sophie!

I’m a Montreal graphic design student. I study Graphic and Web Design at John Abbott College. I have always loved visual art. Drawing, Photography, Film, and Design let me explore my creative side. My love for art started when I was young. In high school, I chose art as my first elective. In my last year, I also tried Photography and Creative Writing. These classes showed me how much I enjoy making things and sharing ideas in new ways.

After high school, I studied Visual Arts at John Abbott College. I then studied Film Animation at Concordia University. In 2024, I decided to go back to school and keep learning. I started the Graphic and Web Design program at John Abbott in the fall of 2025. Since then, I have built on the skills I already had. I have also learned many new skills in design.

What I Like to Make

Photography is one of my favorite parts of design. I have always loved taking photos. Being able to study it in school has been one of my favorite parts of the program. I have learned new ways to take photos. Improving styles that I used before along the way.

Vector art, drawing, typography, branding, and web design are also things I enjoy exploring. My Film Animation background has also helped me a lot. It taught me about movement, layout, stories, and how images can share ideas. I also enjoy video editing. I have worked on a few music videos for local bands. My plan is to keep working on video editing as I grow as a graphic designer.

How I Work

My process for print and web work is very similar. I am a very visual person, so I like to start with a sketchbook. I don’t like to jump right onto my computer. There are always multiple versions of an idea. Then, I pick the one I like best. Sketching lets me try new things fast. It also lets me make mistakes and try again.

I try not to get stuck on my first idea. There is often a better idea waiting to be found. I also care a lot about small details. I spend time making sure each part of my work looks right. At the same time, I am open to feedback. I am happy to change my work when a new idea makes the project better.

My goal is to make work that looks good and has a clear purpose. I also want to be easy to work with. I want people to enjoy working with me and choose to come back to me for more projects.

My Graphic Design Toolkit

The tools I use most are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Figma, and Adobe Premiere Pro. I am also learning Adobe InDesign. I hope to feel more sure using it before I graduate

Outside of Design

When I am not working on school projects, I like to enjoy other forms of art and media. I love to read both paper books and e-books. My Kindle is almost always in my bag.

I also love movies and TV shows. Going to the theater is one of my favorite activities. I will watch almost anything. I like many types of stories from many parts of the world. Since I studied animation, animated movies and shows are also very special to me.

What’s Next?

I am working toward my Graphic and Web Design degree at John Abbott College, Graduating class 2028. The program has students participate in stage opportunities in their final semester (Winter 2028). I am excited to use what I have learned in the world of design in a professional setting. I hope to start working as a Graphic designer in Montreal once I graduate.

The goal is to keep building my skills. I want to try new things and work in new areas of design. My portfolio will grow with me, follow my journey as a Montreal Graphic Design student. I will keep adding new skills and new projects as I learn.

Like what you see, feel free to get in touch. I would love to hear from you!
